And the Europhile BBC remains true to form...

One para in the Janet Daley is piece is especially worthy of restating here:

"The great irony of the mess we are now in is that this concept of a totally rational, perfect society which must be imposed on actual people, each with his own distinct experience and perception of life, was the same delusion that wreaked havoc in Europe for generations. From one Terror to another, Robespierre to Stalin, the enforced experiments ran their course. And virtually every one required the “temporary” expunging of democracy."

We see the BBC is doing a fine job hauling in fresh blood and radical new experts on the Italian political scene to comment pithily on the Stalinesque replacement of an elected PM by an imposed former EU Commissioner and "technocrat". Professor John Foot (eldest son of the late Paul Foot, who was a well known activist from a well known left-wing dynasty, and prop of the Socialist Worker's Party, a fact curiously missing from his bio) seems eminently up to speed on the issues according to his bio:-

"He is currently working on a history of Italian cycling for publication in the UK and Italy"

Also we learn:

"Professor John Foot will be working full time from 2011-2013 on a two-year project fully funded by the Wellcome Trust looking into the life and work of the Italian psychiatrist Franco Basaglia and the process of closure of mental asylums in Italy from the 1960s to the present day."
